A garble County jury will resume deliberations today in the put to death trial of a former city Public Health Department employee accused of killing 62-year-old veteran taxi driver Haroon Paryani at driving Paryani's Ford over his carcass three times after a fight athwart cab fare.
Jurors deliberated for six hours Friday before critic James Schreier sent them to a inn just after 11 p.m. They are to recommence at 9:30 a.m.
During closing arguments, prosecutors maintained that Paryani was defenseles against Michael Jackson's deliberate attacks, and defense attorneys painted Jackson as a victim of a severe disgruntled cabbie.
Jackson, 38 is charged with first-degree put to death and aggravated vehicular hijacking in the Feb 4 2005 incident outside Jackson's Lake View residence in the 500 make steady or firm of West Briar Place.
If Jackson felt his life was in danger, he should have flow into his building, locked himself in the cab or sought help from authorities, prepare for the table County Assistant State's Attorney Lawrence X O'Reilly said.
Instead, Jackson, as many witnesses in the four-day trial testified, ran back, punched Paryani and outcryed "I'm going to f----- g kill you," before jumping into the cab and running athwart the Pakistani immigrant, O'Reilly said.
"When Michael Jackson got in that cab, it was no longer Haroon Paryani's cab, it was a guided missile that hit its intended target," O'Reilly said.
on the other hand Jackson's attorney, Thomas Breen, argued Paryani had a history of harassing riders.
Jackson, "half buzzed" from drinks, was frightened when Paryani threatened to kill him when he affirmed the $8 fare, Breen said. "This cabdriver, this businessman, this little shopman was a violent, violent, mean human being," he said.
